Fiolek Notches First
Career Overall Win in
AMA/WMA Women’s National Motocross Opener at Hangtown

SACRAMENTO,
Calif. (June 1, 2008) – The AMA/WMA
Women’s National Motocross Championship Presented by Kawasaki
competed over the weekend with the opening round of its 2008
six-race championship with American Honda/Red Bull/Alpinestars’
Ashley Fiolek claiming her first career overall win.
Fiolek, who won Saturday’s first moto, grabbed the Meterman
Holeshot Award in moto two and traded the lead with American
Honda/Honda of Houston/Fox Racing/Bad Boy Energy Drink’s Jessica
Patterson before falling on the second lap. Patterson would
assume the lead for good while Answer/Yamaha/Etnies’ Tarah
Gieger and Team Green Kawasaki’s Tatum Sik followed. Fiolek
would battle back, eventually grabbing third and assuring
herself the overall victory. Patterson’s moto win helped improve
her to second place overall while Suzuki/Shift’s Sarah Whitmore
finished in third.
“I’m very happy to be here,” said Fiolek. “I can’t believe I won
the overall, beating the top riders in the world. This is more
than I expected. I rode real tight and cautious (in the
beginning), cased a jump, and fell. Then I just went to work and
came in third (for the moto).”
The AMA/WMA Women’s National Motocross Championship Presented by
Kawasaki resumes next weekend at Freestone County Raceway in
Wortham, Texas. The series is also sponsored by: Honda Rider’s
Club of America, Dunlop Tires, Alpinestars, The Original Pink
Box, Thor MX Gear, Drill Tech Drilling and Shoring, Team
Powermadd, Polisport, Bad Boy Turbo Shot and ZLT Racing.
